Civil Society Engagement with the millennium development goals (MDGs).

Goals: The Global Challenge

  • Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger,
  • Achieve universal primary education.
  • Promote gender equality and empower women.
  • Reduce child mortality.
  • Improve maternal health.
  • Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases.
  • Ensure environment sustainability.
  • Develop a global partnership for development.

Activities can be done;

  • Local and regional MDGs awareness program.
  • Advocacy the policy change
  • Education programs.
  • Capasity building programs.
  • Campaigns that intergrate different issues.
  • Campaigns that promote transperancy and accountability.

It involves participation from governments, members of Parliament and private sectors. Some sectors turn people to participate on MDGs. There are gender (women health care, political rights, economic empowerment), environment (sustainable agriculture, acces to water, loss of environment resources), Youth (education, HIV/AIDS, integration).

Steps forward to consider:

  • Putting things in perspectives. Achievable.
  • Political will.
  • Campaigning.
  • Monitoring.
  • Policy reform.
